CHAPTER FIVE

It’s just past noon when I make my way into the main dining room. The buffet smells amazing. There’s an entire table devoted to different varieties of seafood; everything from smoked halibut to a tray of chilled shrimp. Other tables have bowls of chowders and soups, platters of roasted pork, and plates stacked high with cubed cheeses and sliced fruit.

There’s a constantly moving line of people, filling up their plates and trying to find somewhere to sit. An elderly couple walk past me, taking their plates outside. It’s sweet, watching the old man hold the door open for his wife. I want that for myself, one day. Someone that will love me even once I’m old and gray. Someone who will choose me every day and not just when it’s convenient for him to love.

I slip into the line and get a plate for myself. After last night and a sparse snack, I find that I’m starving. The seafood is too tempting to pass up, and I take a few small pieces of several different types of fish. I’ve never had swai before, but it looks divine. The fruit draws me in too, but it’s less for the cantaloupe and strawberries and more for the dip; a sweet and creamy thing, made from cream cheese and marshmallow fluff.

When I decide that I have enough on my plate, I start looking around for Hugh. I weave through some tables before I feel a gentle grip at my shoulder. I turn with a smile but it quickly turns to a frown when I see the look in his eyes. His dressed in a fresh shirt and slacks but his eyes are full of panic and fear.

“Nia! Nia,” he says, words rushed and low. “Nia, I can’t find Charles.”

Confused, I ask, “Maybe he’s on one of the lower decks? Or in the pools?”

Hugh shakes his head, shuffling with unease. “I’ve looked everywhere. I’ve spent all morning looking for him. He doesn’t pick up when I call his phone, he doesn’t respond to my texts. Nia, I know that you haven’t known him for long, and you haven’t seen him for a while, but Charles has been having a really rough time. He loved his wife more than anything else in the world, and he’s been so depressed since she left him. I’m worried that he’s done something crazy.”

“What would make you think that?” I sit my plate down on the nearest empty table, frowning. “Maybe he’s just-“

“He left a note,” says Hugh. It takes him a moment to pull the slip of paper out of his pocket. The writing is messy and small.

“I can’t do this anymore. I’m going for a walk.”

“When we were younger, Charles used to say that he never wanted to die sick and old. He used to say that…one day, he would walk into the sea and never come back.”

Hugh looks at me then, and there is so much fear and worry in his hazel eyes that it’s shocking.
